What is Your Reading Plan for 2014?

The Bible

This is the time of year when so many people are joining a gym and starting a “Read Through the Bible in a Year” plan. Most of these well-meaning people forsake the gym by February and get lost around Leviticus by March and are never heard from again. I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading their Bible or from working out. I would like to suggest an alternate reading plan for 2014. We can talk about how to stay consistent in your workouts in another post.

Instead of trying to read the whole Bible in a year, why not commit to reading through the New Testament in a year? This is a very attainable goal for someone who will commit to reading at least one chapter a day. There are only 260 chapters in the New Testament. If I read a chapter or two a day, I’ll easily make it through the entire New Testament in 2014 with a couple of months to spare.

After making it through the NT and establishing good Bible reading habits, the more adventurous might be ready to explore the Old Testament. Psalms and Proverbs are a great place to start. Genesis, Exodus, and some of the historical books are interesting and show God’s dealings with His people and how He established them as a nation.

Whichever plan you choose for 2014, however, I encourage you to commit to spending time in your Bible everyday. Reading the New Testament through once a year is a very realistic goal and will help ground someone in their faith and will be a catalyst for their spiritual growth.

Faith and Church History

The idea of faith has always been an integral part of Christianity.
