Aaron and His Really Bad Day

“Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies.”

Moses had been on the mountain for forty days meeting with God and receiving the Law. Meanwhile, Aaron was left in charge. Rather than leading the people, Aaron facilitated their worship of a false god. This story of Moses and Aaron gives us a great contrast between a strong leader and a weak leader:

Aaron could not restrain the people. “You want an idol? Bring me some gold and I will make you one.”

Moses was able to restrain God. After Moses prayed for the people, “the Lord changed His mind” about destroying them.

Aaron was concerned about doing what the people wanted.

Moses was more concerned about obeying God.

Aaron was quick to shift blame. When Moses confronted him, Aaron said, “Don’t get so upset. You know how evil these people are.”

Moses was quick to accept responsibility. Moses asked God to forgive the people for their sin and even prayed that if God would not forgive them that the Lord would kill him along with them.

Weak leaders can do tremendous damage to an organization. Aaron’s weak leadership cost many of the Israelites their lives. It was Moses’ leadership that righted the ship and stopped God’s judgment.

Can you think of any other contrasting characteristics of weak and strong leaders?
