“Moses was 120 years old when he died, yet his eyesight was clear, and he was as strong as ever.”

Several years ago, I noticed that the print of everything I tried to read was getting smaller. I was squinting and moving the book in or out as I tried to read. For almost a year, I thought there was some kind of government conspiracy against me. “Why are they making the print on everything so small?”

Then I thought, “Maybe they’re just using smaller font to save money.”

One day I was walking through Wal-Mart and I passed by the rack that held the reading glasses. On a whim, I plopped a pair on my nose and picked up a magazine. Wow! Everything was clear and focused again! I could see clearly! Now, I never leave the house without my trusty reading glasses.

I think on a deeper level, as we get older, our spiritual vision can get out of focus. As we progress through life, there is a tendancy to gravitate towards the comfortable, the familiar, and the safe ways of doing things. We avoid the risks that we might have taken when we were younger. While this may lead to a peaceful existence, I’m not sure that this is the plan God has for us.

It is important that we stay in step with what God is doing in every generation. Things are not going to look the same as they did 20, 30, or 40 years ago when I was a younger man. If I am going to stay relevant as a leader, though, I am going to have to keep my spiritual reading glasses handy so that I can clearly see how the Holy Spirit is working and moving today. May we all meet the challenge of staying relevant and in tune with the Holy Spirit as we get older.
