Ignorant and Confident?

“To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence.” Mark Twain

This seems like a contradictory message but if you think about it, it really does make sense. I don’t know anyone who has the complete vision for their life. Most of us know where we would like to go and what we would like to accomplish, but none of us are able to see the finished picture ahead of time.

The Holy Spirit puts dreams in our hearts but does not allow us to see the entire journey before us. And that is a good thing. If we saw the opposition, the trials, the failures, and the obstacles that we are going to confront, we would give up before we even started!

We know where we want to go. We have a dream of what we want to accomplish with our lives. As we start taking steps toward our dream, we find we are able to see more of the picture. Every step forward provides more light. More light provides us with more confidence that we are moving in the right direction.

Of course, no one wants to live in ignorance. Today, more than ever, there is no excuse for ignorance. A few clicks of the keypad will provide us with the answers to almost every question. Free education is available for almost every subject over the internet, through books, videos, and podcasts.

Ignorance about our life journey, however, is a type of ignorance that we have little control over. We can prepare ourselves for our future as much as we can. Ultimately, though, we are all ignorant about what is going to happen tomorrow. At the same time, however, we can be confident that God is already there and waiting for us.
