The social media world has become very noisy. For most of us, it is hard to project our voice over the continuous, loud clamor of all the others on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, etc. For most people, this really is not a problem. If all someone is doing on social media is posting pictures of their children being cute and trying to stay connected with friends and family, it is easy enough to have their voice heard.
If, however, you have a message that you are trying to convey, a product, that you are trying to sell, a business that you are trying to promote, Gary Vaynerchuk’s newest book is for you. Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World, is an excellent “how to” guide on how to be effective in using the different social media platforms. The boxing analogy that Vaynerchuk uses is referring to the way that fighters try and set their opponent up for the knockout punch. They throw enough jabs until they see their opening to land the big right hand.
In the world of social marketing, most companies, bloggers, or non-profit groups forget to jab. Instead, every post is a right hook. Every post is an urge to buy, to give, or to click on my site. Vaynerchuk makes the case that unless we are engaging in a conversation with people and telling a story that they can relate to (jabs), it is unlikely that they will respond when we make our pitch (right hook).
At least half of Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook breaks down the top social media sites. Each one requires a different approach. Gary provides many, many examples of posts on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. He gives both positive and negative examples from businesses, non-profit groups, and individuals. These examples and Gary’s critique of them are worth the price of the book.
This book was highly recommended by Michael Hyatt, author of Platform: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World. In fact, I downloaded it after listening to Hyatt interview Vaynerchuk on his podcast. If you are marketing anything or even yourself using social media, make sure you check out Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. You can thank me later!
