“My cup overflows with blessings.” (Psalms 23: 5b NLT)
We learn so much about God from this short phrase from Psalm 23. David could have said, “You fill my cup,” and that would be great. I want to have a full measure of God’s blessings in my life.
Instead of just filling our cup, though, the picture is of a cup flowing over. It is full and running over. To some, this might seem wasteful. Over and over again, however, God is shown to be a Father who wants his blessings to be abundant in the lives of his children.
Instead of God giving us just enough, he really does want to bless us with overflowing blessings. How can I bless others if I am mired in poverty? How can I make a difference if I am struggling to get by? How can I support the work of my local church if I have just enough?
This is not the only Scripture that talks about the overflow of God’s blessings.
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!” (Malachi 3:10)
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” (Luke 6:38)
“And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (2 Corinthians 9:8)
The Bible has much more to say about God’s generosity, but these few verses give us an idea. Do you ever struggle with this idea of living in the overflow of God’s blessings? If you do, you are not alone. I would encourage you to meditate on these Scriptures and do your own Bible search on God’s goodness and generosity. You might be surprised at just how generous your Heavenly Father really is!
