Mom and Daughter Laughing

“Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.”

One of the greatest skills that parents can impart to their children is how to make good choices. Our lives are the sum total of the choices that we make. While it is easy to fall into the trap of wanting our kids to do things right, it is so much better to teach them to do the right thing from an early age. This is a quality that will serve them well the rest of their lives.

Teaching children to make right choices involves guiding and helping them. It also involves letting them accept the consequences when they make a bad choice. Obviously we are not going to let them hurt themselves but there is nothing wrong with letting a child experience the sting of making bad choices. This often provides the parent with a teachable moment to help the child understand the cause/effect relationship between the choices we make.

One of the areas that parents often overlook is the fact that our children learn much about making good or bad choices by the example that their parents set for them. When I was a police officer I responded to many domestic calls between parents and teen children. It should come as no surprise that in many cases, the children were making the same bad choices that they had seen their parents make. The parental example is usually our kid’s most influential teacher, for good or bad.
