“Righteousness is immortal and invincible. On the other hand, sin is a mighty tyrant who subdues all men. This tyrant pounces on Christ. But Christ’s righteousness is unconquerable. The result is inevitable. Sin is defeated and righteousness triumphs and reigns forever.” Martin Luther- Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians.

Have you ever felt that you had that one thing in your life that you just could not defeat? Maybe it is a habit or an addiction. Maybe it is a mindset or an attitude that you just can’t seem to shake. You feel that no matter how hard you try you just cannot overcome this one thing.

I love this passage from Martin Luther. It is not our sin or bad habits that are immortal and invincible. It is not our attitudes or ways of thinking that are going to last forever. It is God’s righteousness that is immortal and invincible. Christ’s righteousness is unconquerable.

John wrote in the Revelation that Jesus “has freed us from our sins by his blood.” The One Who is immortal has already defeated that which is temporal in our lives. The hard part has already been taken care of. Christ shed His blood to give us freedom and victory.

I understand that people struggle with many serious addictions and issues. That struggle is real and powerful. At the same time, we have to understand that God has created us to be overcomers and He has already done everything that He can to set us free.

This does not mean that He is unmoved by our sin and the pain it brings us and others. Jesus is able “to empathize with our weaknesses.” As a human, He is able to understand what we are going through. As God, He is able to empower us to change.

What is one area in which you need a break through in your life?
